Discussion:
yet another portal framework

Hi,

The link is: https://light.dev.java.net/

One feature is particularly interesting is:
#12 - each portlet can be configured to refresh independently, auto
refresh independently and refresh other portlets in the same page.

I noticed that Jason is on the expert group of JSR 286 (Congratulations!).
Maybe the proposed event model could provide the solution for us in the
future. During the meantime, any plan to provide an interim solution?
You all are very busy (we appreciate all the hard work), so this is just a
gentle asking.

Thanks,
Ruey-Juin

Hi,

Did you try using the "aseAjax" attribute in the action tag?
http://www.gridsphere.org/gridsphere/docs/TagGuide/TagGuide.html#actiontags

From meetings with the expert group, Ajax is a hot topic and should
be properly incorporated in the next spec.!

Cheers, Jason

Hi Jason,

No, I haven't tried this new feature yet. Will give it a try sometime.

Does it mean that we could use Ajax to refresh selected portlets such that
these selected portlets will going through the server side portal
rendering mechanism and coming back to the browser but not refresh the
whole page?

Thanks,

Even if I have to use UI tag, it will be worthwhile.

Jason,

Does it only apply to one portlet at a time or can we somehow refresh
other related portlets (but still not the whole page) if they share the
rendering data through PortletSession?

There are no sematics for deciding which portlets to refresh, and
I'm not entirely sure how to do that. I pretty much assumed that ajax
would be used to refresh one portlet with doing a page refresh, since
you are not improving responsiveness much if you refresh all the
portlets displayed on a page. But I do think it's another valid use-case
for sure.

Hi Jason,

One possible use case is like this: there are ten portlets in one page,
three of them are closely related by sharing data among them such that if
one portlet changes, the other two should be updated accordingly (assuming
this update can not be achieved by client side stuff and needs to go back
to the server side.) However, the rest of the page (seven other portlets)
will not be refreshed.

I thought it would be good if the new spec (jsr 286) can provide some
mechanism for doing that.

Thanks,
Ruey-Juin
